How-to Guides: Producing EPUB eBooks from InDesign

January 24, 2010

Adobe recently published three how-to guides that teach you how to produce EPUB eBooks from InDesign. They are very informative and go into great depth. The first white paper provides detailed instructions for setting up an eBook document in InDesign and exporting it to an EPUB file. The second white paper answers common questions about exporting EPUB files from InDesign. And the third white paper teaches you how to prepare images for optimum display on a variety of eBook readers. If you're serious about eBook publishing, you definitely want to download these white papers. You can download them from Adobe.com

Hi, Thanks for the information. I have downloaded the same from Adobe site. Can you please let me know how can I make the text as real small caps? I tried using "font-variant: small-caps;" in CSS but that doesn't work in ADE. Can you please guide me in this regard? This helps. Thanks in advance Ravindra

Good question! To create small caps in an EPUB file, type the word with all capital letters (don't use the All Caps option in InDesign, because the formatting won't be retained in the EPUB file). Then create a paragraph style based on the formatting of the text and apply it.

Next, select all the letters, except for the first one, and make them smaller. Then create a character style based on the formatting of the smaller letters and apply it to the letters. Now when you export the EPUB file, the text will appear as small caps.

Hi Gabriel, Thanks for al this information. After i created the ePub file from a indesign book and open it in adobe digital editions the first cover page is in very bad quality. If i look in indesign the image is fine. I used a jpg image. Is there a setting that i must use? In de epub export window it doesn't matter if i choose high quality image or not. Thanks in advanced. @Jopie25 Based on your description, I'm not exactly sure what you mean when you say the image is "very bad in quality". Is it too small, too large, or is it pixelated? Using the following guidelines, you can easily control the quality of your images in an EPUB file:

  • Place a high resolution image. It doesn't really matter what file format you use.
  • Use the points measurement system instead of inches, millimeters, or another system. Then determine how wide you want an image to be in pixels and make it that wide in points. An image that is 350 points wide becomes 350 pixels wide in the EPUB file. Make the cover image between 400 and 600 points wide, depending on how tall it is.
  • When you export the EPUB file, choose Optimized from the Copy Images menu in the Images section of the Digital Editions Export Options dialog box. Also select the Formatted option and choose High from the Image Quality menu.

If you are still having trouble exporting quality images, let me know.

Hello, I'm just getting started with creating ebooks. Right now, I have a MS Word file for Windows that I saved in RTF format and in plain text format. I figured my next step is to go to the Adobe Bridge and browse or the files. I saw them listed. But the problem is, I can't do anything with them. I want to convert them to Adobe InDesign fils so I can add them to the book box in the CS5 Create a New Document window. If I click on the files, I'm just taken back to MS Word. I've been trying to do this for 3 days now. What do I need to do to get these files so I can work with them? Thanks a lot for any help you can give me.
