Episode 4: Creating an Automatic
Numbered List

August 31, 2008

Numbered lists provide an excellent way to organize information, but producing them can be demanding work. Thanks to InDesign, you can entirely automate the list creation process.

This episode teaches you how to use the Bullets and Numbering feature to create a complex multilevel numbered list. You'll also learn to create a series of paragraph styles that can be used together to automatically number and format the list. If you produce technical manuals or textbooks, you definitely want to check out this episode.

Once you've seen the episode, you might want to practice creating the numbered list yourself. After becoming a member, you'll be able to click the link below to download the demonstration files. Let me know how it goes by adding your comments to this post.

Hi, I tried to creat a multi level bulleted list by using the multilevel list process, with no success. Can you please advise how I can achieve this as I would like to include this feature in my corporate template. I am also fairly new to indesign. Many thanks, Dolores

@Dolores This podcast teaches you how to create a multilevel numbered list, not a bulleted list. Creating a multilevel bulleted list requires a different set of steps.

First, enter the bullet character you want to use followed by a tab character and the text. Separate each entry in the list with a paragraph return. Then you need to use a combination of the Left Indent and First Line Left Indent options to setup a hanging indent. For example, create a 12 pt left indent and a -12 pt first line left indent. Each level of the list needs to be indented further. If this short description doesn't help you, check out my book, Instant InDesign, which provides specific instructions for setting up a hanging indent. Or you can refer to InDesign Help.
